Thoughts on the Crave series “So Long, Marianne”

“So Long, Marianne” is a new series on Crave that tells the story of Leonard Cohen’s relationship with a woman named Marianne who he met when living on the island of Hydra, in Greece in the early 1960s.

The kid from Hereditary plays Cohen and he does a good job of embodying Cohen.  I was impressed at how he could actually play many of Cohen’s early songs and does a decent rendition of his voice and guitar playing.  The actress who plays Marianne is very appealing and beautiful.

The series captures well the time period, right on the cusp of free love and Cohen was obviously an early adopter of that philosophy and lifestyle.  The relationship that develops between Leonard and Marianne is deep and intense.  There is good chemistry between to the two lead actors to make the relationship seem palpable and believable.

The personality that is portrayed on the part of Cohen is very dark and melancholic.  There are times when you think he is very mentally unstable with intense highs and deep lows.  Sometimes it is fuelled by substances, sometimes it is the result of an obvious inborn personality tendency that comes from previous experiences, whether upbringing or other.

Being a huge fan of Cohen’s work, both written and in song, I found this series to be very compelling and enjoyable.
